Buttonwood Grove farms estate-grown grapes on the west shore in Romulus, with a tasting room that faces the lake directly and takes advantage of it. The vineyard is a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Wine_Classic">Governor's Cup</a> winner at the New York Wine Classic. Cabin accommodations on the property (April through November) make Buttonwood Grove the only full overnight experience on the <a href="https://cayugawinetrail.com">Cayuga Lake Wine Trail</a> proper: tastings, live music events, and waking up in the vines. The deck overlooking the vineyard is one of the better places to sit with a glass anywhere on Route 89. Tasting reservations strongly suggested.

Buttonwood Grove Winery

Cayuga Ridge Estate Winery was one of the five founding members of the <a href="https://cayugawinetrail.com">Cayuga Lake Wine Trail</a> when it opened under the name Plane's Cayuga Vineyards in 1980, making it one of the oldest vineyard operations on Cayuga Lake. The current tasting room operates in a rustic barn under gothic church lights. Sustainable practices from the vineyard through the bottle are the operating standard. Artisan cheese, picnic provisions, and wood-fired pizza from The Copper Oen are available on selected weekends. The gift shop carries urban home décor alongside the wine. Open daily.

Hosmer Winery farms 70 acres on the western shore of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayuga_Lake">Cayuga Lake</a> in Ovid with a focus on sustainable viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking, celebrating 40 years in operation in 2025. The portfolio is notably broad for an estate operation: Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grüner_Veltliner">Grüner Veltliner</a>, all grown on the same property. The Patrician Verona Vineyard on the estate is one of the older planted blocks on the west shore. The tasting room is relaxed and accessible; the farming story earns the stop as much as the wine.

Hosmer Winery

70-acre sustainable estate on the western shore

<p>Lucas Vineyards has been Cayuga Lake's oldest winery since its first vintage in 1980, a distinction earned almost by accident. The Lucas family moved from Long Island in 1974 to grow grapes commercially for Taylor Wine Company. Three years in, Taylor cancelled the contract. When New York's Farm Winery Act passed and allowed grape growers to open tasting rooms, Ruth Lucas's response was direct: let's try it, and if it doesn't work we'll have one big party. It worked. Three generations later, the estate covers 35 acres across 14 grape varieties including Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and winter-hardy hybrids. Winemaker Jeff Houck, Ruth's son-in-law, produces over 25 wines totaling more than 23,000 cases annually, from méthode champenoise sparkling and Reserve reds to ice wines and the nautical-themed Tug Boat and Nautie lines. The winery has collected over 1,200 international and regional medals. Free live music runs Thursday summer evenings at Nautie Summer Nights. Walk-ins are welcome.</p>

Sheldrake Point Winery is located on what local producers call the Gold Coast: the west-shore stretch in Ovid where limestone-heavy soils deliver flint, minerality, and structure that defines <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayuga_Lake">Cayuga Lake</a>'s signature white wines. The estate has been producing since 1997 and is one of four boat-accessible wineries on the lake, with dock parking for visitors arriving by water. The portfolio focuses on Riesling and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gewürztraminer">Gewürztraminer</a>, with a Dry Rosé and Cabernet Franc that have developed followings. Sheldrake Point won a Gold Medal at the 2024 New York Wine Classic.

Thirsty Owl Wine Company on the west shore in Ovid operates on a walk-in only basis, which makes it one of the more spontaneous stops on the trail. It is also one of four wineries on Cayuga Lake accessible by boat, with dock parking for lake-day visitors. The on-site Bistro at Thirsty Owl serves seasonal farm-to-table food open spring through fall, making it a strong lunch stop. The wine style leans toward food-friendly, with a solid dry Riesling and a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayuga_White">Cayuga White</a> that represents the terroir well.

Stanton moved to Seneca Falls in 1847 with her husband Henry Stanton, and it was in this house that she drafted the Declaration of Sentiments, modeling it on Jefferson's Declaration of Independence and preparing it for the convention she helped organize at the Wesleyan Chapel the following year. She lived here with seven children from 1847 to 1862, using the house as her organizing base during the period when the women's rights movement was establishing its foundational arguments. Preserved as part of the Women's Rights National Historical Park, the house includes period furnishings and NPS interpretive exhibits. Open daily May through October; admission included with the park pass.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton's home in Seneca Falls, where she drafted the Declaration of Sentiments before the 1848 convention, modeling it phrase by phrase on Jefferson's Declaration of Independence. The house is preserved as part of the Women's Rights National Historical Park and includes period furnishings and interpretive exhibits on Stanton's life and the broader suffrage movement. Stanton lived here from 1847 to 1862 with her husband Henry Stanton and their seven children. NPS-operated; admission included with Women's Rights National Historical Park pass.

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Cady_Stanton">Elizabeth Cady Stanton</a> drafted the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_Sentiments">Declaration of Sentiments</a> at her kitchen table in Seneca Falls, modeling it phrase-for-phrase on Jefferson's Declaration of Independence, then read it aloud at the Wesleyan Chapel on July 19, 1848. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Douglass">Frederick Douglass</a>, the only Black person in attendance, made the argument that secured the suffrage resolution by the narrowest of margins. It took 72 years for that resolution to become law. The NPS visitor center on Fall Street connects the chapel, the M'Clintock House in Waterloo where the Declaration was drafted, and Stanton's home. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Women's_Hall_of_Fame">National Women's Hall of Fame</a> is one block away on Fall Street. Free admission. Open year-round.

Women's Rights National Historical Park

Where 300 people rewrote the rules in two days

At the northern end of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayuga_Lake">Cayuga Lake</a>, where the lake drains through the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seneca_River_(New_York)">Seneca River</a> and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erie_Canal">Erie Canal</a> corridor, the landscape that made the Underground Railroad function is still legible. The canal and river systems provided the northward routes that conductors used to move people from central New York toward Oswego and the lake crossing to Canada. Montezuma Heritage Park sits on the Seneca River at the point where those routes converged, adjacent to the <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/?q=place_id:ChIJ5VkbuF-00IkRLzrbkQBxcxI">Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge</a>. Tom Higgins was a practicing physician when he and Susan planted their first vines on the east shore outside <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Springs,_New_York">Union Springs</a>, NY. The single estate produces <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riesling">Riesling</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinot_noir">Pinot Noir</a> from shale slopes with direct lake exposure, farmed with the specificity that comes from knowing every row personally. Production is deliberately small — under 2,000 cases annually. Heart &amp; Hands runs on appointments, meaning you are likely to be in conversation with the people who made the wine rather than waiting for a pour. The estate has become one of the reference producers on the east-shore <a href="https://cayugawinetrail.com">Cayuga Lake Wine Trail</a> for the same reason the best small-production estates anywhere become reference points: the site is exceptional and the winemaking gets out of its way. Reserve a tasting before you drive.

One vineyard, two varieties, no shortcuts

Long Point Winery sits on the east shore in Aurora on 72 acres overlooking <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayuga_Lake">Cayuga Lake</a>, producing award-winning dry reds including Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Riesling. The tasting room faces west across the water. Amelia's Deli offers freshly cut Italian meats, cheese, and specialty sandwiches on weekends. Long Point is also one of four boat-accessible wineries on Cayuga Lake with dock parking. Family-operated; open daily.

Peter Saltonstall has been farming the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Ferry,_New_York">King Ferry</a> hillside since the early 1990s, making Treleaven one of the longer-established estate operations on the east shore of Cayuga. The dry Riesling has won at the New York State Fair multiple times and consistently places among the top east-shore bottles in comparative tastings. The tasting room terrace faces west across the lake; afternoon light is excellent. On-site restaurant (Farm in the Willows / The Hangtime) serves seasonal food. The estate grows its own fruit entirely, meaning the consistency from vintage to vintage tells you something real about the site rather than blending it out. Open year-round on Route 90 in King Ferry.

Treleaven Wines

Thirty years on the same hillside, and the vines know it

Long Point State Park occupies the east shore just south of Aurora: free public boat launch, dock access, picnic tables, swimming beach, and a bathhouse. The park is on a V-shaped spit of land extending into the lake. It is the closest public-access waterfront to the <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/?q=place_id:ChIJ4V06QU-80IkRnwkDLzNRPJg">Inns of Aurora</a> and the Aurora wine trail cluster. The park also has a lakeside cottage rentable for overnight stays. Good fishing access for smallmouth bass and trout. Open year-round.

Americana Vineyards has been farming the west shore outside Interlaken since near the beginning of the organized <a href="https://cayugawinetrail.com">Cayuga Lake Wine Trail</a>. The Joseph family runs it as a genuine family operation: wine and cider on the same property, a broad portfolio that serves first-time trail visitors and repeat customers equally well. The on-site cidery and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayuga_Lake_Wine_Trail">Crystal Lake Café</a> make Americana a dual-badge stop on the Finger Lakes Craft Beverage Trail alongside the wine trail. On the west-shore Route 89 loop, it sits at the point where the farm corridor and the wine trail feel most integrated with each other. Open year-round.

Americana Vineyards

One of the oldest, and still among the most welcoming

The farm store at Lively Run Dairy is a stop on its own: a working dairy where the production is visible and the products are as local as local gets. The Cayuga Blue, a blue-veined goat's milk cheese, is the signature. The fresh chèvre changes character week to week depending on what the herd is eating. Open seasonally on Route 89 in Interlaken. Don't miss the aged chèvre log if it's on the counter: they make it in small batches and it sells out.

Lively Run Goat Dairy

Steven and Susanne Messmer have been farming the Interlaken hillside since 1982. Lively Run Dairy predates both the organized wine trail and the term "artisan cheese." The herd produces goat and cow milk for a range of fresh and aged cheeses including the Cayuga Blue, which has won at the American Cheese Society. Two miles south of the Finger Lakes Cider House on Route 89.

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buttermilk_Falls_State_Park_(New_York)">Buttermilk Falls State Park</a> sits two miles south of downtown Ithaca with a natural swimming pool at the base of the main falls: cold, clear, the kind of swim people remember for years. The gorge trail runs through a sequence of cascades before the main drop. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilian_Conservation_Corps">CCC</a>-built stone bridges and steps from the 1930s are part of the experience. Best combined with <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/?q=place_id:ChIJp_VU5UCH0IkRXDAGfftSF9M">Robert H. Treman State Park</a> on the same afternoon for a half-day gorge loop from Ithaca. Staffed swimming area in summer.
