Letchworth State Park follows the Genesee River for 17 miles as it drops over three major waterfalls and carves a gorge that reaches 600 feet deep in places. The park is about the same acreage as Manhattan. There are 66 miles of marked trails, a 24-mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail, whitewater rafting, seasonal hot-air ballooning, and more than 50 waterfalls when spring runoff hits the tributary creeks. William Pryor Letchworth, a Buffalo industrialist, began buying land above the Middle Falls in 1859 and spent 50 years developing the estate around Seneca heritage preservation. He bequeathed the entire property to New York State in 1906. Don't miss: the view from Inspiration Point at sunset, or a ranger-led tunnel tour of the Mount Morris Dam at the park's northern end. Letchworth State Park

Seventeen miles of gorge, three major waterfalls, and a 600-foot canyon.

Adventure Calls Outfitters has been running whitewater rafting and kayaking trips on the Genesee River through Letchworth's gorge for decades. The signature trip is the Class II-III run that launches below the Lower Falls and takes paddlers through the southern gorge on a half-day that ends with a hike past a tributary waterfall. Beginners and families are the typical crew; the guides run groups of every experience level. Kayak instruction and rentals are also available. The outfitter works with school groups, senior classes, and private families, and the guide staff is consistently named by clients as a reason to book the trip. Don't miss: the spring high-water rafting season, when the Genesee is at full flow and the rapids are at their most dramatic.

The Arcade & Attica Railroad runs 14 miles of track between Arcade and Curriers Station through the Wyoming County farmland that has looked mostly the same since the 1880s. It holds two distinctions: it's one of the last common-carrier shortline railroads in the United States that runs regular freight and passenger service on the same track, and its Steam Locomotive No. 18 (a 1920 Consolidation) is the only operating steam passenger engine in New York. Passenger excursions run weekends from Memorial Day through the last weekend of September in vintage WWII-era Boonton coaches pulled by vintage diesels. October weekends are fall foliage runs on the steam engine. Seasonal special events, Santa's Wonderland Express in December, Civil War weekends, World War II weekends, wine and beer tastings, murder mysteries, picnic and cycle tours, are the rest of the calendar. Don't miss: the fall foliage steam runs in October, the Santa's Wonderland Express in December, or the July picnic and cycle tour, which loads bikes on the train for the outbound trip and rides back through Wyoming County hills.

Arcade & Attica Railroad

The only operating steam passenger railroad in New York State.

Hidden Valley Animal Adventure is the drive-through animal park that turns Varysburg into a weekend destination for families from Rochester and Buffalo. The operation spans about 80 acres. Visitors can self-drive in their own cars with a bucket of feed, or book a guided bus tour with a driver who knows the animals by name. Bison, camels, ostriches, elk, llamas, and a rotating mix of other species come up to the vehicles. A small petting zoo, a barn with smaller animals, and a grill with lunch round out the property. The self-drive route takes roughly 90 minutes at a leisurely pace. Seasonal, check the website for current operating dates. Don't miss: the self-drive route on a weekday morning, when the animals are hungry and the vehicles ahead of you are few.

A drive-through animal park in Varysburg with bison, camels, ostriches, and elk.

Castile Cider Mill has been pressing cider in the same spot for decades. The shop is open seasonally, roughly two months in the fall, and closes until the next year's apples come in. Fresh cider is the draw, along with cider doughnuts, honey, maple syrup, and a rotating selection of pantry goods. The staff pour cider flights, including pear and peach seasonal variations. The back patio sits beside a small stream, shaded, and is a fine place to eat a doughnut on a cool October afternoon. Cash or check only, no cards. Don't miss: a half-gallon of fresh cider and a bag of cider doughnuts on the way out of Letchworth's Castile entrance. Check their hours before you drive out, they open late September and close in November.

Fresh-pressed apple cider and cider doughnuts, open eight weeks a year.

East Hill Creamery is a farmstead cheese operation on the edge of Perry, making Alpine-style cheeses in the tradition of French Gruyère and Comté, aged in their own cheese cave on-site. All the milk comes from their grass-fed herd; everything is made on the farm. The retail side is small and serious: a tasting counter, a well-curated selection of other regional products, and a 24-hour cheese vending machine for off-hours, the only one of its kind in the region. The property also operates as a wedding and event venue, with the cheese cave doubling as cocktail hour backdrop. Don't miss: the alpine wheel and the raclette. Ask whoever is working the counter what came out of the cave most recently.

East Hill Creamery

French Alpine-style cheese made from the farm's own raw milk.

The William Pryor Letchworth Museum opened in 1913 as a repository for the collection Letchworth assembled during his 50 years building the Glen Iris estate. The focus is Seneca material culture and the Genesee Valley's 19th-century history. The museum sits near the Council Grounds, where the relocated 1765 Seneca Council House and the Mary Jemison gravesite are part of the interpretive grouping. Letchworth was unusual among 19th-century American collectors in that he treated Seneca heritage as worth preserving on its own terms, not as a curiosity. He spent decades corresponding with Seneca descendants and worked closely with Mary Jemison's grandchildren on the 1874 reburial of her remains at the Council Grounds. Don't miss: the Genesee Valley Canal room, which documents the 19th-century attempt to bypass the Letchworth gorge with locks. The canal was abandoned and its right-of-way is now part of the Genesee Valley Greenway.

Prehistoric World occupies three connected buildings on Lake Street in Perry, housing reptiles and amphibians from tropical, desert, and forest environments. The zoo is run by REPCO Wildlife, a conservation and rehabilitation organization, and most of the collection comes from rescues. Visitors can hold and interact with animals in the Jungle Room, meet desert tortoises and prairie dogs in Desert Lands, and watch keepers work one-on-one with animals throughout the day. Admission is $8; season passes are $30.

Prehistoric World Reptile Zoo

New York's only reptile zoo at 14 Lake St in Perry, where visitors hold and interact with rescued reptiles and amphibians.

Silver Lake State Park occupies 776 acres on the southwestern shore of the lake, a few miles south of the village of Perry. The park is primarily a boat access point: the hard-surface ramp puts anglers and pleasure boaters onto a lake that's home to largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, bluegill, and black crappie. There are picnic tables, a pavilion, restrooms, and a small playground. The park isn't really a swimming park, though the lake itself is shallow and warm. Silver Lake's inlet and outlet are both at the same end, an unusual feature that makes it one of the most hydrologically distinct small lakes in the region. Don't miss: rent a pontoon or paddleboard from Silver Lake Marine next door to cover more of the three-mile lake than the shoreline allows.

Burley Berries and Blooms is a fruit and flower farm in Warsaw run by Ryan and Megan Burley, who brought a Western New York grazing dairy background and a Pennsylvania produce farm background to the same hillside. The farm grows specialty cut and heirloom flowers for U-Pick and weddings, offers an eight-week Dairy and Flower CSA, and opened a micro-creamery in 2023 producing fresh milk, yogurt, and butter from Ryan's family's dairy herd. The U-Pick flower garden is open dawn to dusk, self-serve, no charge.

Brad White has been boiling sap since he was eight years old, starting with an A-frame sugarhouse built from a repurposed swing set. Today Sweet Time Maple runs approximately 20,000 taps across Genesee, Wyoming, and Livingston counties, producing pure maple syrup and raw unfiltered honey. During March Maple Weekends the sugarhouse opens for tours, free samples, and an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast.

Wyoming County maple producer tapping 20,000 trees across eight locations, making pure maple syrup and raw honey.

The Silver Lake Brewing Project occupies a reclaimed building at 14 Borden Avenue in Perry, minutes from both Silver Lake and Letchworth State Park. The brewery specializes in Belgian, farmhouse, and American styles, with a rotating tap list that runs toward saisons, Brett-inoculated ales, barrel-aged Flanders reds, and clean American pilsners. Beer only in the taproom; growlers and crowlers available to go. Open year-round.

The Pioneer Cabin sits on the Silver Lake Institute grounds and is maintained by the Wyoming Historical Pioneer Association, which has been organizing the annual Pioneer Picnic since 1874, making it one of the oldest continuously running events in New York State. The cabin holds tools, documents, and household items from Wyoming County's early settlement era. The building itself is the story as much as the contents. It's a survivor from the campground's earliest Methodist years, when the Institute was Camp Wesley. Don't miss: the Pioneer Picnic in August, when the Pioneer Association opens the cabin and runs programming tied to the 19th-century camp meeting tradition.

Mary Jemison, known in Seneca as Dehgewanus, was captured in Pennsylvania in 1758 at age 12, adopted by a Seneca family, and spent the rest of her life choosing Seneca identity over a return to colonial culture. She received a 17,297-acre land grant at the Gardeau Flats under the 1797 Treaty of Big Tree, making her one of the largest landowners in western New York. She dictated her memoir to James Seaver in 1823 at Whaley's Tavern in Castile; the book went through 30 editions. She was initially buried at the Buffalo Creek Reservation in 1833. In 1874, at her grandchildren's request, William Pryor Letchworth had her remains moved to his estate and reinterred next to the 1765 Seneca Council House he'd relocated from Caneadea. Henry Kirke Bush-Brown's bronze statue, dedicated weeks before Letchworth's death in 1910, marks the grave. Don't miss: Nancy Jemison's cabin, also on the grounds, which belonged to Mary's daughter and was moved here in 1881.

The Warsaw Historical Society operates out of the Gates House, built in 1824 and the home of Seth Gates, an abolitionist Congressman who served from 1839 to 1843 and was one of the most active anti-slavery voices in the U.S. House of Representatives during that era. Warsaw's anti-slavery history reaches back even earlier: the first anti-slavery society in the United States was organized in the village in 1833. The museum covers the full sweep of Wyoming County's story: the Underground Railroad network that operated through the area, the agricultural and industrial history, and the civic institutions that shaped the county. Curator Holly Watson-Huddle programs changing exhibits that focus on specific figures and moments. Don't miss: the Underground Railroad documentation, which traces specific local routes and the farm families who sheltered freedom seekers moving north toward Lake Ontario.

Amber Lantern Brewing Company opened as Wyoming County's first microbrewery and occupies a historic storefront on Warsaw's North Main Street. The tap list mixes house beers with guest pours, and the pub menu covers the full range from burgers and wings to quesadillas and fries. The kitchen works with fresh meat for the burgers. Onion rings get specific praise. The room feels more pub than brewery, with a long bar and tables spread across the space. Closed Sunday and Monday. Don't miss: the Ryan burger with onion rings, and whatever house IPA is pouring that weekend.

Amber Lantern Brewing Company

Wyoming County's first microbrewery, on Warsaw's Main Street.

The Perry Farmers' Market has been a Saturday morning institution on South Main Street since the early 2000s. Fifteen to twenty vendors set up in the Festival Plaza between Borden and Dolbeer, running from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. between mid-June and the last weekend of September. The mix is the usual and the welcome: produce, baked goods, eggs, honey, jams, flowers, prepared foods, and handcrafted goods from Wyoming County makers. Live music most weeks. The market doubles as a community hub where neighbors catch up and visitors from Letchworth stock the cottage fridge for the week. Don't miss: swing by for breakfast pastries and coffee, walk the block to Old Souls afterward for a second round.

Charcoal Corral and the Silver Lake Twin Drive-In are a single family-run property that covers most of what a summer night in Perry might need. Twin drive-in screens show first-run movies on weekends. Inside the complex are a burger and sandwich grill, a pizza parlor, an ice cream counter serving Perry's Ice Cream, an arcade, an 18-hole western-themed mini golf course, and a 40-foot sluice where kids can pan for gems, fossils, shark teeth, and arrowheads. Tuesday rib nights and Saturday pit barbecue (chicken, brisket, pulled pork) are the weekly rhythms. Monthly Super Cruise car shows bring 150 to 600 classic cars onto the grounds. Cash only, but ATM on site. Seasonal, opens late spring, closes late fall. Don't miss: pizza and ice cream before the 8:30 p.m. movie, with a round of mini golf in between.

The Arts Council for Wyoming County runs the main gallery on Perry's South Main Street, a two-floor space that hosts rotating exhibitions, artisan fairs, film screenings in a recently renovated projection room, concerts, and the summer youth art camp that puts Perry kids in front of working artists. The gift shop up front carries a tight selection of work from county artists: ceramics, prints, jewelry, fiber work. The space is the cultural center of downtown Perry and a reason the village's arts scene punches above what a town of 3,700 would normally sustain. Don't miss: a Friday night concert during the summer series, or the Fiber Flurry event that fills both floors with fiber artists.

Theatre @ 37 is the Perry home of Josh Rice Projects, the company behind Shake on the Lake, the touring Shakespeare ensemble that started at Silver Lake in 2011 and now plays across the Finger Lakes each summer. The 37 South Main venue hosts plays in development, stand-up comedy, puppetry, and the biennial New York State Puppet Festival, which Josh Rice brings to Perry every other year. The space is intimate, a storefront theater that seats a few dozen, and the programming leans toward experimental work. It's part of the Perry revitalization story: a former retail space now running as a full-time arts venue. Don't miss: a Shake on the Lake summer performance at Silver Lake State Park, or whatever puppet work is in residency at Theatre @ 37 during your visit.

Books & Fields is the quieter of Perry's two bookstores, an owner-operated used bookshop that runs on weekends only. The inventory is well-organized and kept in superb condition, pricing is reasonable, and the range runs from contemporary fiction and mysteries to rare and out-of-print titles that regular visitors come specifically to browse. Mr. Bickel, the owner, is deeply knowledgeable and happy to help visitors track down a specific title or work through a new area of interest. It's a used bookstore that feels curated rather than accumulated. Don't miss: ask at the counter if you're looking for something specific. Many of the best titles never make it to the shelves.

Books & Fields

A used bookstore on South Main with a carefully kept inventory and a knowledgeable owner.

Eleven Covington occupies the Covington Street end of the same building as Family Furniture and functions as the curated small-goods half of the operation. The mix is specific: unusual floor and table lamps, air plants, natural skin care, home fragrance, and a rotating selection of pieces from small artisans. The owner, Nichole, has a steady eye for what Perry needs that isn't available elsewhere in the county. The shop pairs well with a Main Street coffee run, it's two doors from Old Souls Bakery and Act 4 Books. Don't miss: the lamp selection on the ground floor, or whatever small-artisan ceramic collection is on the shelves that month.

Trillium Nature Center, operated by the Buffalo Audubon Society at Beaver Meadow Preserve in North Java, covers 364 acres of meadows, forested upland, and wetlands crisscrossed by eight miles of well-marked trails, including a quarter-mile ADA-accessible boardwalk over the marsh. The nature center itself was renamed Trillium in 2025 following a full interior renovation. Interactive exhibits on meadow and wetland ecosystems fill the first two floors, along with live animals, a natural history library, and a nature gift shop. A private cabin overlooks the beaver pond and is available to rent for weekend stays. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing run when conditions allow. Trails are free to access from dawn to dusk daily. The nature center is open Tuesday through Saturday. No pets permitted. Don't miss: the beaver pond loop at dusk, the kettle pond trail across the road, and the insect hotel in the front meadow.
