The Wadsworth Homestead

The oldest continually family-owned estate west of the Hudson River, with weekly tours and event hosting.

Livingston County

The Wadsworth Homestead is the oldest continually owned private estate west of the Hudson River, held by the Wadsworth family without interruption since 1804. The pioneer brothers James and William Wadsworth settled Geneseo in 1790 and built the current manor house fourteen years later on 300 acres overlooking the Genesee River Valley. Seventh-generation owner Will Wadsworth gives first-person guided tours through the formal rooms on the first and second floors, moving through two centuries of American history via original letters, portraits, furniture, clothing, firearms, and objects connected to the family's relationships with presidents, generals, and reformers. The house opened to the public for the first time in 2011 and now hosts tours Tuesday through Saturday by appointment, plus weddings, events, and overnight accommodations. The Genesee Valley Hunt, one of the oldest fox hunts in the country, still meets on the property. Don't miss: a tour with Will on a weekday morning, when the house is at its quietest.
