Red Tail Ridge Winery

The first LEED Gold certified winery in New York State, run by a Gallo-trained PhD viticulturist and her partner on a Penn Yan hillside designed to be farmed for generations.

Yates County

Red Tail Ridge sits on 30 estate acres on the western shore of Seneca Lake in Penn Yan, where Nancy Irelan and Michael Schnelle have been farming since 2005. The winery building itself earned Gold LEED Certification in 2011, built around geothermal heating and cooling from the ground up. The portfolio is organized into distinct categories: sparkling wines, innovative whites, innovative rosés, cool-climate reds, and specialty wines, with varieties that push well past Riesling and Pinot Noir into Teroldego, Lagrein, Blaufrankisch, and Dornfelder. The main tasting room, completed in 2023, features sweeping views of Seneca Lake through open garage doors, a hand-made bar, and ceilings clad in six native Finger Lakes tree species. An outdoor pavilion runs spring through late autumn, and a dedicated dog-friendly tasting reservation is available for guests who prefer their wine with a side of fur.

Don't miss: the Sparkling Rebel with a Cause, a méthode champenoise red sparkling wine blending Blaufrankisch, Cabernet Franc, Teroldego, and Lagrein, which is unlike anything else being made on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
