In 1852, Dr. Andrew Oliver built this Italianate brick house on Main Street in Penn Yan as a wedding gift for his son William, who followed him into medicine. William's three children, Jennie, William Jr., and Carrie, grew up in the house and never left. None of them had children. When Carrie died in 1942, she willed the property to the village.
The Oliver House now holds six period rooms furnished with a mix of the family's original belongings and the collections of the Yates County Historical Society. Five rooms are maintained as Victorian period displays; others rotate through local history exhibits. Guided tours are available, and the museum is set up to work well for families with kids.
