Monks' Bread is the retail outlet for the Abbey of the Genesee, a Trappist monastery on River Road in Piffard that has operated a commercial bakery since 1953. The monks bake in large quantities and distribute Monks' Bread to grocery stores throughout the Northeast, but the abbey's own shop sells fresh loaves, specialty varieties, biscotti, jams, and gift items not available in stores. The bread program supports the monastic community. The abbey grounds are peaceful and open to visitors, though no photography is permitted indoors. The shop runs Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The monastery itself is one of a small number of Trappist communities in New York State and has been on the Genesee River since 1951. Don't miss: the cinnamon raisin and rye loaves, the anise almond biscotti, and a walk through the abbey grounds along the Genesee River.
