Johannes Reinhardt comes from a family of winemakers in Bavaria, trained in Germany, worked at Dr. Konstantin Frank, then spent 14 years as head winemaker at Anthony Road Wine Company before opening Kemmeter Wines in 2013 on a 20-acre property directly across Route 14. He planted the first Kemmeter vines in 2014 and by 2018 the estate was growing all its own fruit: Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Gewürztraminer, with rows oriented southeast to northwest to maximize morning and afternoon sun. Tastings are by appointment only, limited to six people, and led by Johannes himself in a small Mennonite-built tasting room with Bach on the speakers and a clear view of Seneca Lake. The SanSan label is reserved for the best vintages. His wife Imelda, a food scientist who grew up on a small island in Indonesia and completed graduate research at Cornell on grape and wine analysis, runs Sans Dumplings on the same property. Reservations book out weeks in advance.
