Howland Stone Store Museum

Quaker abolitionists, cobblestone walls, 1837

Cayuga County

The Howland Stone Store Museum in Aurora is an 1837 cobblestone commercial building built by the Howland family: prominent Quaker abolitionists whose connections to the Underground Railroad network made Aurora a documented station decades before Harriet Tubman arrived. The Howlands circulated petitions, hosted speakers, and ran businesses that refused to stock goods produced by enslaved labor. The building is one of the finest examples of cobblestone construction in New York State, built from rounded fieldstones deposited by glaciers across the lakeshore. Open seasonally.
