Hobart and William Smith Colleges

Geneva Medical College admitted Elizabeth Blackwell in 1847, making HWS's predecessor the site of the first medical degree granted to a woman in the United States.

Ontario County

The decision to admit Elizabeth Blackwell to Geneva Medical College in 1847 was, by several accounts, partially accidental: the faculty put the question to a student vote as a formality, expecting rejection, and the students voted yes as a joke. Elizabeth Blackwell did not know this. She arrived in Geneva, attended every lecture, completed every requirement, and graduated first in her class in January 1849. The London Times covered the graduation. The dean who handed her the degree reportedly bowed as he did it. She went on to found the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children in 1857 and the Women's Medical College of the New York Infirmary in 1868. The Hobart and William Smith campus on Pulteney Street sits on the lakefront bluff directly above the water, the best free view at the lake's north end. A plaque marks the site of the original Geneva Medical College building. The campus is open to visitors year-round.
