Grimes Glen is a free, year-round gorge walk accessible from a trailhead on Vine Street, a two-minute walk from the center of Naples village. The trail follows Grimes Creek upstream through layered Devonian shale, with walls that climb steadily as the gorge narrows, ending at a pair of 60-foot waterfalls at the head of the canyon. The round trip is approximately one mile; the streambed is the trail for most of the walk, and water shoes are the correct footwear. The shale walls are fossil-bearing: in 1882, one of the most intact fossilized trees ever found was excavated from the glen, a specimen now held in the New York State Museum in Albany. In late September, when the surrounding hills are at peak color, the combination of Grimes Glen and the South Bristol Overlook on Route 64 constitutes the most efficient fall foliage circuit at the south end of Canandaigua Lake. Free and open year-round.
