The Conesus Inlet Wildlife Management Area occupies 2,100 acres of meadows, forested upland, and freshwater marshland at the southern end of Conesus Lake, managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The inlet itself is one of the more productive birding areas in Livingston County, drawing waterfowl and wading birds through spring and fall migration. Trails branch off West Lake Road and East Lake Road south of the lake. A hand-launch cartop boat access puts paddlers directly into the inlet, which opens onto the southern end of the lake. Hunting for waterfowl and deer is permitted in season. The area is undeveloped, with no facilities beyond a few roadside pull-offs and trail markers. Free and open year-round. Don't miss: the observation deck at the inlet's edge in early May for migrating shorebirds, and the flat marsh trail along the creek for an easy hour-long paddle.
