The Birkett Mills has operated on Penn Yan’s Main Street since 1797, sitting on the Keuka Outlet where it has drawn water power from the same source that drove the mills of the entire outlet corridor. It is the world’s largest producer of buckwheat products, with its Pocono brand distributed nationally. The retail store sells buckwheat flour, groats, pancake mixes, and specialty grains direct from the mill floor. Factory tours are not publicly available, but the retail operation and milling equipment are visible from the store. Penn Yan hosts an annual Buckwheat Harvest Festival each September. Open weekdays.
