Vinny Aliperti first learned to make wine in his grandfather's cellar in Queens as a teenager, trained as a winemaker's apprentice on Long Island, and came to the Finger Lakes in 2003 as head winemaker at Atwater Vineyards before he and Kim purchased Billsboro in 2006. His wines, which have been covered by Decanter, Wine Spectator, VinePair, and the Washington Post, are built around texture and fruit, sourced entirely from sustainably farmed partner vineyards including Sawmill Creek, Bright Leaf, Martini Family, and Buttonwood. The tasting room operates out of a beautifully restored barn on the western shore of Seneca Lake near Geneva, with a covered deck overlooking the northern end of the lake. On-site chocolatier Cary Becraft of Carymo Chocolate creates seasonal artisan pairings available year-round in the tasting room. Vinny also founded FLX CBEC, the Finger Lakes Craft Beverage Environmental Coalition, and the winery runs entirely on solar electricity. Reservations are recommended.
Don't miss: the wine and chocolate pairing, which Cary Becraft builds seasonally around what Vinny has in the cellar and is one of the more thoughtful pairings available on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
