Waterloo

Waterloo sits five miles west of Seneca Falls on Route 20 and most visitors pass through without stopping. That is a mistake. The M'Clintock House, where the Declaration of Sentiments was drafted before the 1848 convention, and the National Memorial Day Museum, which documents the first Memorial Day observance in 1866, are on the same main street. Two American origin stories within a five-minute walk of each other.Congress formally recognized Waterloo as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. The village has observed it annually since May 5, 1866, the longest uninterrupted streak in the country. The National Memorial Day Museum at 35 East Main Street is open May through October, free admission. The M'Clintock House is part of the Women's Rights National Historical Park and open seasonally. Waterloo is the five-minute detour from Seneca Falls that most people skip and later wish they had not.
